Transkriptsioonikompleksid are molecular machines responsible for gene expression in all living organisms. They are responsible for the process of transcription, which is the synthesis of an RNA molecule from a DNA template. This process is fundamental to life as it allows the genetic information encoded in DNA to be converted into functional molecules like messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA).

In eukaryotes, the process is more complex and involves several distinct transcription complexes, each with specific roles. RNA polymerase II is the central enzyme responsible for transcribing protein-coding genes into mRNA. In prokaryotes, transcription is simpler and primarily carried out by a single type of RNA polymerase, often associated with a sigma factor that recognizes promoter sequences. The interaction between RNA polymerase and the promoter is crucial for the accurate and efficient initiation of transcription.

The formation and function of transcription complexes are highly regulated. This regulation ensures that genes are expressed at the right time and in the right amounts, a process vital for cell differentiation, development, and response to environmental changes. Dysregulation of transcription complexes can lead to various diseases, including cancer and developmental disorders.
