The most basic transistor relationship involves a single transistor acting as a switch or amplifier. In a switching application, the transistor is either fully on, allowing current to flow, or fully off, blocking current. As an amplifier, it controls a larger output current based on a smaller input current or voltage.

When multiple transistors are combined, more complex relationships emerge. For instance, a common configuration is the logic gate, such as an AND, OR, or NOT gate, which forms the building blocks of digital circuits and computers. These gates perform logical operations on binary inputs.

Another significant transistor relationship is found in amplifier circuits. Transistors can be cascaded to increase gain, or arranged in complementary pairs (like in a push-pull amplifier) to improve efficiency and linearity. Differential pairs, where two transistors share a common emitter or source, are crucial for many analog integrated circuits, offering high common-mode rejection.

The concept also extends to memory cells, such as the static random-access memory (SRAM) cell, which typically uses several transistors to store a single bit of data.
