Transiittiaikamenetelmät, often translated as transit time methods, is a broad category of techniques used to measure the time it takes for a signal or particle to travel between two points. These methods are fundamental in various scientific and engineering disciplines, providing insights into material properties, flow rates, and distances.

In physics, transit time methods are employed in particle accelerators to measure the velocity of subatomic particles. By determining the time taken for a particle to traverse a known distance, its momentum and energy can be accurately calculated. Similarly, in seismology, these methods are used to analyze seismic waves. The arrival times of P-waves and S-waves at different seismograph stations allow scientists to map the Earth's interior structure and locate earthquake epicenters.

In fluid dynamics, transit time methods are utilized in flow meters to measure the speed of a fluid. Ultrasonic flow meters, for example, transmit sound pulses upstream and downstream. The difference in transit times of these pulses is directly proportional to the fluid velocity.
