Transatlanticism

Transatlanticism is the term used to describe the political, economic, cultural, and social ties across the Atlantic Ocean, especially between Europe and the Americas. It denotes patterns of cooperation and exchange rather than a single cohesive doctrine, encompassing institutions, norms, and practices that link these regions.

Historically, transatlantic ties have roots in early exploration and colonization, with intensified exchange during the 19th century through migration and trade. The 20th century saw dramatic expansion of cooperation through security alliances and multilateral institutions formed after World War II, notably in Western Europe and North America. The postwar period also established frameworks for economic integration, diplomatic coordination, and cultural exchange that shaped the transatlantic relationship for decades.

In the modern era, the relationship is often framed as a transatlantic economic and political partnership. Areas of emphasis include trade and investment, regulatory dialogue, security coordination, and joint action on global issues.
