It sits at the intersection of trait theory and emotion research, proposing that core personality dimensions modulate the frequency, intensity, and quality of emotional reactions, creating consistent responsiveness that persists beyond single episodes. Traitsemotion differs from mood in that it reflects longer-term predilections rather than a single state, and from momentary emotions in that it emphasizes stability across contexts.

Researchers conceptualize traitsemotion as comprising several facets, such as baseline affectivity, emotional reactivity, regulation style, and appraisal tendencies.
