Traficomin

Traficom, short for Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto, is Finland's government agency responsible for the regulation and supervision of transport and communications. The form Traficomin is the genitive in Finnish and is commonly used in sentences referring to the agency, for example when citing its decisions or statements.

Established on January 1, 2019, Traficom arose from the merger of the Finnish Transport Agency (Liikennevirasto) and the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (Viestintävirasto). It took over duties related to road, rail, maritime and aviation safety, as well as regulation of communications networks and digital services.

The agency’s functions include regulatory oversight, licensing and permits; road safety and enforcement; vehicle registration and driving licenses; maritime, aviation, and rail safety; spectrum management and regulation of communications; cyber security and protection of critical information infrastructure; infrastructure planning and transport statistics; and consumer protection within transport and communications sectors.

Organized under the Finnish government, Traficom is led by a director general and comprises sector-specific departments and regional offices. It collaborates with other authorities, municipalities, and European Union bodies to implement national policies and harmonize standards across member states.

Traficom aims to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in transport while ensuring reliable digital communication services. The agency plays a central role in policy implementation, regulatory oversight, and the practical administration of licenses, registrations, and inspections across Finland’s transport and communications sectors.
