Traatsöötmist

Traatsöötmist, also known as wire feeding, is a process used in various manufacturing and industrial applications, primarily in welding and metal deposition. It involves the continuous and controlled delivery of a consumable wire electrode to a workpiece. This wire serves as both the electrical conductor for the arc and the filler material that fuses with the base metal.

The core components of a traatsöötmise system typically include a wire feeder unit, a welding gun or torch, and the wire spool itself. The wire feeder houses a motor and drive mechanism that grips the wire and propels it forward at a consistent speed. This speed is crucial for maintaining a stable arc and achieving consistent weld quality. The welding gun directs the wire to the joint and also delivers shielding gas, which protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

Traatsöötmist is widely employed in semi-automatic and automatic welding processes such as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), also known as MIG welding, and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). Its advantages include increased productivity due to the continuous wire supply, reduced operator fatigue, and the ability to achieve high-quality welds with proper parameter settings. The type of wire used can vary greatly, depending on the base metal being joined and the desired weld properties, ranging from solid steel wires to cored wires containing fluxing agents. Beyond welding, traatsöötmist principles are also applied in processes like additive manufacturing (3D printing of metal) and some forms of thermal spraying.
