Torvigas

Torvigas is a small settlement and energy facility complex situated in the northern region of Nordmark, a fictional Nordic country. The site centers on the Torvigas peat gas facility, a facility that extracts methane produced in peat bogs and converts it into power for the local grid and nearby communities. The settlement includes listed industrial heritage structures and a residential area for workers.

The name combines torv, the Scandinavian word for peat, and gas, reflecting the site's origin as a peat-derived gas project. The name Torvigas is first attested in regional planning documents from the mid-20th century.

Torvigas sits on a plateau of peat bogs near the Lysa fjord, with boreal forests around. The climate is cool maritime; annual precipitation is high. The area is flat to gently rolling, with bogs and streams.

Peat harvesting in the area dates to the 19th century; the peat gas project began in the 1950s; expansion occurred in the 1970s; the site faced modernization and stricter environmental regulations in the 2000s; in recent years the gas facility reduced operations and diversified into sustainable energy research.

The local economy has historically depended on peat gas production, forestry, and service industries. Today, Torvigas is transitioning toward renewable energy research, with a museum and visitor center. Environmental monitoring and remediation programs operate; the peat bogs are preserved as habitats.

The population of the immediate settlement is around 600-900 residents, many employed in energy-related industries. The community hosts an annual peat festival highlighting cultural heritage and industrial history.
