The word is often presented as a neologism formed from "torr," a nod to pressure units, and "halt," meaning stop, signaling a stopping of non-critical operations under pressure.

Definition and scope. Torrhalt denotes a class of protocols rather than a single mechanism. In typical use, activation arrests non-critical environmental control, lighting, and consumer systems while preserving life-support, propulsion, data integrity, and critical safety subsystems. Two common variants are soft Torrhalt, which reduces loads gradually over minutes, and hard Torrhalt, which immediately suspends non-essential functions.

Activation and operation.
