Topologityper

Topologityper is a hypothetical meta-concept in topology that assigns to each topological space a compact descriptor, the topologityper, intended to summarize its qualitative features in a single profile. The idea is to enable coarse-grained comparison between spaces without reciting the full suite of invariants.

Definition and construction: A topologityper consists of a finite tuple of feature values drawn from predefined scales. Typical features include compactness, connectedness, separability, metrizability, local compactness, and the structure of the boundary or ends. Each feature is given a categorical or ordinal value, and the resulting profile serves as a shorthand for the space's qualitative topology. The representation is not unique; different spaces can share the same topologityper.

Use and interpretation: In theoretical discussions and pedagogy, the topologityper functions as a heuristic classification tool rather than a complete invariant. It supports comparisons, such as identifying broad similarities between spaces or guiding intuition about which standard theorems may apply. It is not part of the established formal toolkit in mainstream topology, and no canonical scales or features are universally agreed upon.

Examples: A compact, connected, metrizable space might be assigned a profile indicating compactness, connectedness, and metrizability. A non-compact, totally disconnected, non-metrizable space would obtain a very different profile. The same topologityper may arise from non-homeomorphic spaces, illustrating its non-uniqueness.
