Tonwechsel

Tonwechsel refers to a change of tonal center or key within a musical work. In music theory it is commonly described as modulation. Through a tonwechsel, the music moves from one key to another, establishing a new home key and often altering mood, texture, and developmental possibilities.

The change is usually achieved through several mechanisms. A pivot chord, one that belongs to both keys, can bridge the transition smoothly. Diatonic modulation stays within closely related keys using shared scale tones, while chromatic modulation uses altered or secondary chords to move to a distant key. Enharmonic modulation relies on reinterpreting a chord's spelling to connect keys. Some modulations are direct or abrupt, occurring without a preparatory pivot, and are chosen for contrast or surprise.

Common types of tonwechsel include diatonic modulation, chromatic modulation, and enharmonic modulation. A pivot chord technique is often combined with a sequence or a material in one key that is reinterpreted in the new key.
