Tonfalllosigkeit refers to a speech characteristic where the intonation or melody of speech is reduced or absent. This means that the pitch of the voice remains relatively flat and unchanging throughout an utterance, lacking the natural rises and falls that convey emotional nuance, emphasis, or grammatical information. It can manifest as a monotonous delivery.

In linguistics, tonfalllosigkeit is often discussed in the context of prosody, which encompasses rhythm, stress, and intonation. A lack of tonality can make speech sound robotic, detached, or difficult to understand, as the listener may miss cues that would normally indicate the end of a question, an exclamation, or a statement. While not a disorder in itself, it can be a symptom associated with various neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, certain types of brain injury, or some psychiatric disorders. It can also be a learned behavior or a cultural difference in speech patterns.
