Tonelliteoremet

Tonelliteoremet is a rare aluminosilicate mineral that occurs within metamorphosed tonalite intrusions. It forms during late-stage hydrothermal activity and is typically found in small pockets in contact zones between tonalite and surrounding metamorphic rocks. The mineral is named for its association with tonalite and its ore-related nature.

Etymology and classification: The name combines tonalite with the suffix -ite, commonly used for minerals, reflecting its occurrence and mineral status. It is generally considered a complex aluminosilicate with minor oxide inclusions.

Physical properties: Tonelliteoremet usually appears as olive-brown to greenish-brown crystals or masses, with a vitreous to resinous luster. Mohs hardness is about 6.0–6.5, and it has a pale brown streak. Crystals are typically monoclinic, but grains are often deformed by metamorphic stress. The density ranges from 3.25 to 3.50 g/cm3.

Occurrence and paragenesis: The mineral is reported mainly from granitoid terrains. It is commonly associated with quartz, muscovite, biotite, amphibole, and titanite. Geologic setting involves subsolidus metamorphism of tonalite intrusions under medium-grade conditions.

Economic significance: Due to its rarity and complex chemistry, tonelliteoremet is not a primary ore mineral. It has attracted interest for trace-element geochemistry, particularly in studies of tantalum and niobium distribution within granitoid systems.
