Tonawanda

Tonawanda is a city located in Erie County, New York, United States. It lies on the north bank of the Tonawanda Creek, which forms part of the boundary between Erie County and Niagara County, and also serves as a boundary with the town of Tonawanda. The city is situated across the creek from the city of North Tonawanda.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Iroquois Confederacy before European settlement. The name "Tonawanda" itself is derived from an Iroquois word meaning "swift running water." The development of Tonawanda was significantly influenced by the construction of the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825. The canal's presence spurred industrial growth and transportation, making Tonawanda a key port and manufacturing center. Lumber milling was a major industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with Tonawanda becoming known as the "Lumber City."
