Tomrumscirkels, a Swedish term roughly translating to "void circles" or "empty circles," refers to a phenomenon observed in certain landscapes, particularly in grasslands. These circular patches are characterized by a lack of vegetation at their center, while the periphery is often ringed with denser growth. This stark contrast in plant life is what gives them their name.

The formation of tomrumscirkels is not fully understood and is the subject of ongoing scientific research. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain their existence. One prominent theory suggests that they are caused by the activity of ants or termites, whose burrowing and nest-building activities disrupt the soil and inhibit plant growth in the immediate vicinity. Over time, this cleared area can expand, creating the characteristic circular pattern.

Another proposed explanation involves competition for resources. It is theorized that a central plant may initially establish itself, and its extensive root system or allelopathic properties (the release of chemicals that inhibit the growth of other plants) could suppress vegetation in a circular area around it. As this central plant dies or its influence wanes, the surrounding vegetation might then colonize the periphery.
