Todennäköisyysottanta, or probability sampling, is a fundamental technique in statistical research and surveying. It involves selecting a sample from a population in such a way that each member of the population has a known and non-zero probability of being included in the sample. This contrasts with non-probability sampling, where selection is not random.

The core principle of probability sampling is randomness. By giving every element of the target population a chance to be chosen, the method aims to create a sample that is representative of the entire population. This representativeness is crucial for making valid inferences and generalizations about the population based on the sample data.

Common methods of probability sampling include simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, cluster sampling, and systematic sampling. In simple random sampling, each member has an equal chance of selection. Stratified sampling involves dividing the population into subgroups (strata) and then randomly sampling from each stratum. Cluster sampling selects random groups or clusters of individuals, and systematic sampling involves selecting every nth individual from a list.

The main advantage of probability sampling is that it allows for statistical inference. The known probabilities of selection enable researchers to calculate sampling error and confidence intervals, providing a measure of the reliability of the sample results. This makes probability sampling the preferred method for scientific research and opinion polls where generalizability is a key objective. However, probability sampling can be more complex and costly to implement than non-probability methods.
