Toaleta is the term used in several languages, notably Polish, for a toilet or restroom—the facility or room used for eliminating human waste. It usually refers to a sanitary installation connected to a drainage system, typically featuring a bowl, a flushing mechanism (or a pit) and a seating surface.

Common types include flush toilets (water closets) that discharge waste into a sewer or septic system; pit latrines; composting toilets; squat toilets; and portable toilets for temporary use. Residential toilets are usually sit-down models with a cistern and flush valve; public facilities vary widely and may include accessibility features.

History and design: Indoor lavatories appeared in ancient civilizations, but modern flush toilets developed in Europe from the 16th to the 19th centuries and became widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries with advances in urban sanitation. A typical flush toilet consists of a bowl, a trap that prevents sewer gases from entering, a water supply, and a flushing mechanism. Maintenance includes regular cleaning and proper waste disposal; handwashing after use is standard hygiene practice.
