Titanidioksidi

Titanidioksidi, known in English as titanium dioxide, is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium with the chemical formula TiO₂. It is a white, crystalline solid that is widely used for its bright whiteness and high refractive index, making it a common pigment in various industries.

Titanium dioxide is primarily extracted through the dioxane process or from mineral sources such as ilmenite, rutile, and anatase. Its high opacity and brightness make it a valuable pigment in products like paints, coatings, plastics, paper, and cosmetics. It is also used in food products as a coloring agent (E171), providing a white hue.

Beyond pigmentation, titanium dioxide has applications in sunscreens due to its ability to block ultraviolet light. It is chemically inert, non-toxic in typical usage, and exhibits excellent stability under UV exposure and various environmental conditions.

Despite its widespread use, there has been some concern regarding the inhalation of titanium dioxide particles, particularly in powdered form, due to potential health risks. However, regulatory agencies generally recognize it as safe when used appropriately, although ongoing studies continue to evaluate its safety profile.

Titanium dioxide’s unique combination of whiteness, brightness, chemical stability, and safety profile has established it as one of the most important white pigments used globally. Ongoing research aims to explore its potential in nanotechnology and other advanced applications.
