Timberandwale

Timberandwale is a term that refers to the practice of combining two distinct elements in construction and woodworking: timber framing and wattle and daub. Timber framing involves the use of large, heavy timbers to create a structural skeleton for a building. These timbers are typically joined together using traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon, rather than nails or screws. This method results in a strong and durable frame that can support substantial loads.

Wattle and daub is a building material used for filling in the spaces between the timbers of a timber frame. It consists of a lattice of interwoven sticks or branches, known as wattle, which is then plastered over with a mixture of mud, clay, straw, and animal dung, called daub. This creates a solid, insulating wall.

The combination of timber framing and wattle and daub was a common building method throughout Europe for centuries, particularly in medieval times. It allowed for the construction of sturdy homes and other structures using readily available natural materials. The timber frame provided the essential structure and support, while the wattle and daub infill offered insulation and a surface for plastering or other finishes. While modern construction methods have largely superseded this technique, timberandwale remains a significant part of architectural history and is sometimes employed in historical restoration projects or in modern eco-building initiatives.
