Tijdsignatuur

Tijdsignatuur is a Dutch term that translates to "time signature" in English. It is a notational convention used in music to specify how many beats are contained in each measure (bar) and which note value is equivalent to one beat. The time signature is typically represented as a fraction, for example, 4/4 or 3/4, placed at the beginning of a piece of music.

The top number of the time signature indicates the number of beats per measure, while the bottom number indicates the note value that receives one beat. For instance, in a 4/4 time signature, there are four beats per measure, and a quarter note (1/4 note) receives one beat. Similarly, 3/4 signifies three beats per measure with each beat being a quarter note.

Time signatures can be simple, compound, or complex. Simple time signatures divide the measure into equal parts, such as 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4. Compound time signatures involve divisions of the beat into smaller units, commonly seen in signatures like 6/8 or 9/8. Complex signatures, though less common, combine elements and often include irregular groupings.
