Tijdinconsistentie refers to a situation where a plan or set of decisions made at one point in time is not optimal or even feasible when viewed from a later point in time, due to new information or changing circumstances. This concept is frequently discussed in the fields of economics, public policy, and decision theory. A classic example involves government policy. A government might enact a policy that encourages a certain behavior because it appears beneficial at the time of enactment. However, if the policy's long-term effects are not fully understood or if the economic landscape changes, the original policy might become detrimental or inefficient.

This inconsistency arises because decision-makers are often forward-looking, anticipating future outcomes. However, the future is inherently uncertain. What seemed like a good decision based on projections might turn out to be a poor one when those projections are proven wrong by actual events.
