Tiivistymisytimiä are microscopic particles in the atmosphere that serve as surfaces for water vapor to condense upon, forming clouds and precipitation. These tiny particles, also known as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), are essential for the formation of water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere. Without them, the air could hold much more water vapor than it typically does, and clouds would not form.

The composition of tiivistymisytimiä is diverse and can include natural substances such as sea salt, dust, pollen, and soot from forest fires or volcanic eruptions. Anthropogenic sources also contribute, with industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust releasing fine particles that can act as CCN. The size and chemical properties of these nuclei play a crucial role in determining the size and characteristics of the cloud droplets that form. Smaller nuclei generally lead to more numerous but smaller cloud droplets, while larger nuclei can result in fewer but larger droplets.

The process begins when air becomes saturated with water vapor, meaning it can no longer hold all the moisture in gaseous form. As the air cools or more water vapor is added, the saturation point is reached. At this point, water vapor molecules seek out the tiivistymisytimiä to transition from a gas to a liquid state, a process called condensation. This condensation forms the tiny water droplets that make up clouds. If temperatures are below freezing, water vapor can also deposit directly onto ice nuclei, forming ice crystals. The presence and type of tiivistymisytimiä are therefore fundamental to understanding cloud formation and precipitation processes in Earth's climate system.
