Thiolactams

Thiolactams are a class of organic compounds that are cyclic thioamides. This means they contain a sulfur atom within a ring structure, where the sulfur atom is double-bonded to a carbon atom, and that carbon atom is also bonded to a nitrogen atom, forming a thioamide functional group. They are the sulfur analogs of lactams, which contain an oxygen atom instead of sulfur in a similar cyclic amide structure.

Thiolactams are typically prepared through various synthetic routes. One common method involves the reaction of a lactam with a thionating agent, such as phosphorus pentasulfide (P4S10) or Lawesson's reagent. These reagents effectively replace the carbonyl oxygen of the lactam with a sulfur atom. The chemical properties of thiolactams are influenced by the presence of the sulfur atom. They can exhibit tautomerism, existing in equilibrium with their thiol form, similar to how amides and thioamides can tautomerize.
