Therapeuten is a generic term used in Dutch and several other languages for professionals who provide therapeutic services to improve health and well-being. The category encompasses a range of disciplines, including mental health therapists (such as psychotherapists and counselors) and physical rehabilitation therapists (such as fysiotherapeuten and ergotherapeuten). Depending on specialization, therapeuten may work with individuals, couples, families, or groups to address emotional, cognitive, behavioral, motor, or functional problems.

Education and regulation: Most therapeuten complete a professional degree in their field, followed by supervised practice and licensure or registration with a national or regional authority. Requirements vary by country and discipline. In many fields, practitioners are required to follow ethics codes and participate in ongoing professional development.

Practice and methods: Therapeuten assess client needs, set goals, and implement treatment plans using evidence-based techniques. Mental health therapists may use talk therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic approaches, or humanistic methods; physical therapists use exercises and modalities to improve movement and reduce pain; occupational therapists help people regain daily functioning through adaptive strategies. Therapies are usually delivered in clinics, hospitals, private practices, schools, or community centers.

Outcomes and regulation: Effectiveness depends on the condition, the approach, and the therapeutic relationship. Safety, informed consent, confidentiality, and collaboration with other health professionals are fundamental elements of practice. Because licensure and titles vary by jurisdiction, clients are advised to verify credentials and scope of practice with local regulatory bodies.
