Theophyllinelääkkeet, often referred to as theophylline drugs, are a class of bronchodilator medications used primarily in the treatment of respiratory diseases. These medications work by relaxing the muscles in the airways, making it easier to breathe. They are typically used for conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The primary active compound in this class of drugs is theophylline, a methylxanthine alkaloid. Other related compounds, such as aminophylline and dyphylline, are also used. Theophylline drugs are administered orally, intravenously, or rectally, depending on the specific formulation and the patient's needs. Their mechanism of action involves inhibiting phosphodiesterase enzymes, which leads to increased levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in smooth muscle cells. This increase in cAMP promotes bronchodilation.

While effective, theophyllinelääkkeet have a narrow therapeutic index, meaning the difference between a therapeutic dose and a toxic dose is small. This necessitates careful monitoring of blood levels to prevent adverse effects. Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, headache, insomnia, and tremors. More serious side effects, often associated with elevated blood levels, can involve cardiac arrhythmias and seizures. Due to these potential risks and the availability of newer, safer medications, the use of theophyllinelääkkeet has declined in favor of inhaled corticosteroids and short-acting beta-agonists for many patients. However, they remain a valuable treatment option for some individuals, particularly those with severe or difficult-to-control asthma or COPD who do not respond adequately to other therapies.
