Thawr

Thawr is a hill located near Mecca in present-day Saudi Arabia. It holds significant religious and historical importance within Islamic tradition. The hill is situated approximately 4 kilometers south of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca.

Historically, Thawr is renowned for the Cave of Thawr (Ghar Thawr), where Prophet Muhammad and his companion Abu Bakr took refuge during their 622 migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina. According to Islamic accounts, the cave provided shelter and concealment from their pursuers, the Quraysh. Miraculously, a spider spun a web at its entrance, and a dove nested within, which helped deceive the pursuers into believing that no one was inside. This event holds symbolic significance, emphasizing divine protection and guidance during critical moments in Islamic history.

The Cave of Thawr is a significant pilgrimage site, attracting Muslims who seek to reflect on the Prophet’s journey and the early struggles of Islam. Visitors often explore the cave and the surrounding area, which remains a symbol of resilience and faith.

Geographically, Thawr is part of the rugged terrain around Mecca and has a prominent rocky formation. The hill provides a vantage point overlooking parts of the city and its surrounding desert landscape.
