Th2skewing

Th2skewing refers to an imbalance in the immune system where the T helper 2 (Th2) cell response is dominant over other T helper cell responses, particularly the T helper 1 (Th1) response. T helper cells are a subset of lymphocytes that play a crucial role in coordinating the immune system's adaptive response. They differentiate into various subtypes, each with distinct cytokine profiles and functions.

The Th1 pathway is generally associated with cell-mediated immunity, important for combating intracellular pathogens like viruses and bacteria. In contrast, the Th2 pathway is primarily involved in humoral immunity, promoting antibody production and defense against extracellular parasites. It also plays a significant role in allergic reactions and the immune response to helminths (parasitic worms).

A Th2skewed immune system may exhibit an exaggerated response to allergens, leading to conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. This overemphasis on Th2 cytokines can suppress the Th1 response, potentially making individuals more susceptible to certain intracellular infections.
