Testspenninger

Testspenninger are the voltages applied to electrical equipment during insulation and dielectric-strength testing. The term is used in German-language engineering literature and is commonly rendered in English as test voltages. The purpose is to reveal weaknesses in insulation and to demonstrate that a component can withstand service conditions without breakdown.

During a test, the voltage is applied for a defined duration, and the device is monitored for leakage current and other responses. Tests may be performed on individual components, assemblies, cables, or finished products, and the required voltage level and test time depend on the product category and applicable standards.

Testspenninger cover a wide range. For consumer electronics they are typically from a few hundred volts to a few kilovolts, while industrial equipment and power cables may require tens of kilovolts. Tests may use direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC), and procedures may include ramping the voltage, a holding period, and a controlled discharge after the test.

Standards from international and national bodies define recommended test voltages, durations, and safety practices for different applications. Common references include high-voltage test standards and insulation standards that specify methods for evaluating dielectric strength and insulation integrity.
