Testiretestiarviointi, also known as test-retest reliability, is a statistical measure used to assess the consistency of a measurement tool or instrument over time. It involves administering the same test or assessment to the same group of individuals on two or more separate occasions under similar conditions. The results from these repeated administrations are then compared to determine the degree of agreement. A high test-retest reliability indicates that the instrument yields similar results when administered repeatedly, suggesting that the scores are stable and not unduly influenced by random error or fluctuations in the testing situation. Conversely, low test-retest reliability suggests that the instrument is not consistent and its scores may vary significantly between administrations. This can be problematic as it makes it difficult to draw reliable conclusions or make comparisons based on the measurements.

The process typically involves selecting a representative sample of participants, administering the instrument, waiting for an appropriate interval (which can vary depending on the nature of the measurement), and then re-administering the same instrument to the same participants. The correlation coefficient, such as Pearson's r, is commonly used to quantify the degree of agreement between the scores obtained at different time points. A correlation close to +1 indicates perfect positive reliability, while a correlation close to -1 indicates perfect negative reliability. A correlation close to 0 suggests little to no reliability. Test-retest reliability is a crucial aspect of psychometric evaluation, particularly for instruments designed to measure stable traits or constructs, such as personality characteristics or intelligence. It is important for ensuring that observed changes in scores are likely due to genuine changes in the construct being measured, rather than random variability.
