Tessalon

Tessalon is a brand name for benzonatate, a non-opioid antitussive used to relieve coughing. It is available in oral capsule form, commonly 100 mg, and works by dampening the cough reflex in the airways.

It is prescribed for the symptomatic relief of cough due to minor throat or airway irritation from colds or bronchitis. It does not treat the underlying illness and should be used under medical guidance. It is not a narcotic and does not act in the brain to produce euphoria.

Mechanism of action: Benzonatate anesthetizes stretch receptors in the respiratory tract, reducing the cough reflex at its source.

Administration and usage: Capsules should be swallowed whole; do not chew or dissolve the contents, as chewing can cause numbness of the mouth and throat and may increase the risk of choking. If a dose is missed, follow the prescribing physician’s instructions.

Safety and precautions: Common adverse effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and a numb or tingling sensation in the mouth or throat. Rare allergic reactions or confusion may occur. It should not be used in people with a known allergy to benzonatate. It is not approved for children under 10 years of age. Overdose can be dangerous and requires urgent medical attention.
