Terugkeerniveaus, a Dutch term, translates to "return levels" in English and is a concept used in the statistical analysis of extreme events. It quantifies the magnitude of an event that is expected to occur on average once within a specified period. For instance, a return level of 100 years signifies an event that has a 1% chance of being exceeded in any given year.

The calculation of return levels is crucial in various fields, including hydrology, climatology, and engineering, to inform risk assessments and design standards. For example, in flood defense, engineers might use return levels to determine the height of a dike required to protect against a 1000-year flood. Similarly, in climate change studies, return levels are used to understand how the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events might change in the future.

The methodology typically involves fitting a probability distribution to historical data of extreme events. Common distributions used for this purpose include the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution or the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD). Once the distribution is fitted, the return level for a chosen return period can be estimated.
