Termomeetrite

Termomeetrite is a term used in materials science and geoscience to denote a high-temperature silicate-oxide phase that is theoretical or synthetically produced under extreme conditions. The name is derived from thermo- (heat) and a conventional mineral suffix, reflecting its proposed stability at elevated temperatures.

Natural occurrence of termomeetrite has not been confirmed in any known mineral deposits. It is hypothesized to form in very high-temperature metamorphic environments or within magmatic slags, where intense thermal conditions drive the formation of unusual silicate-oxide phases. In laboratory settings, researchers have described synthetic preparations that aim to reproduce the phase under controlled high-temperature conditions, typically using solid-state reactions of iron- and magnesium-rich silicates at substantial temperatures and controlled atmospheres.

Structurally and physically, termomeetrite is described in speculative studies as crystallizing in an orthorhombic system with prismatic crystal habits. The color is reported to range from colorless to pale brown, with a vitreous to sub-vitreous luster. Mohs hardness is suggested to be in the 6–7 range, and density around 3.9–4.2 g/cm3. Thermal stability is commonly cited as extending up to roughly 1500–1800°C, depending on the surrounding atmosphere, with possible polymorphic transitions at high temperature.

Significance and potential applications are primarily speculative. If confirmed, termomeetrite could serve as a model system for silicate-oxide chemistry at extreme temperatures and might have future use as a high-temperature ceramic or refractory material. Its status remains uncertain, with ongoing research and discussion in speculative or laboratory-context literature.
