Termolamination

Termolamination is a manufacturing process that bonds two or more layers by applying heat and pressure to a thermally activated interface, producing a laminated composite. It relies on adhesives or layer surfaces that soften or cure under heat, allowing intimate bonding without solvent-based processing.

The typical process involves surface preparation, precise alignment of layers, heating to activate the adhesive or to soften the layers, consolidation under pressure, and controlled cooling to set the bond. Variants include sheet-to-sheet lamination and continuous roll lamination used in packaging and film production.

Materials used include thermoplastic films (such as PET, PE, or PLA), paper, textiles, wood veneers, and composite prepregs. Adhesive systems include hot-melt and thermally reactive resins; some termolaminates rely on the intrinsic tack or bonding of the layers when heated.

Applications span packaging, architectural veneers, automotive interior panels, electronics encapsulation, solar modules, and protective laminates where combined properties such as moisture barrier, dimensional stability, and mechanical strength are valued.

Advantages include strong, uniform bonds, good barrier properties, and rapid production. Limitations involve energy input, potential thermal degradation of heat-sensitive substrates, mismatch of thermal expansion, and recyclability challenges for multilayer structures.
