Terminalbetriebssystem is a German term that translates to "terminal operating system" or "terminal OS." It refers to an operating system specifically designed for use on a terminal device. Terminal devices, often referred to as thin clients, are computing devices that rely heavily on a remote server for processing power and data storage. Unlike a full-fledged desktop operating system which contains all the necessary components for standalone operation, a terminal OS is minimalistic and primarily focuses on establishing a connection to a server and displaying the user interface provided by that server.

These operating systems are typically lightweight and optimized for low resource consumption. They often boot up quickly and have a simplified user interface. The main function of a terminal OS is to manage network connections, handle input/output devices (like keyboards and mice), and present the graphical user interface (GUI) or command-line interface (CLI) that is actually running on the server. Examples of technologies that utilize terminal operating systems include remote desktop protocols like RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) or VNC (Virtual Network Computing), and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions. The primary advantage of this approach is centralized management, enhanced security as data resides on the server, and cost savings due to less powerful and cheaper hardware at the client end.
