Termetërmetët, often referred to as earthquakes, are natural phenomena characterized by the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. This energy is typically accumulated over time due to the slow movement of tectonic plates, which are large pieces of the Earth's lithosphere. When the stress along the boundaries of these plates exceeds the strength of the rocks, a rupture occurs, leading to an earthquake.

The point where the earthquake originates is called the hypocenter or focus, and the point directly above it on the Earth's surface is known as the epicenter. The size of an earthquake is measured using seismographs, which record the ground motion. The most common scales used are the Richter scale and the moment magnitude scale, which quantify the energy released.

Earthquakes can cause a wide range of effects, from barely perceptible tremors to catastrophic ground shaking. The intensity of shaking depends on the earthquake's magnitude, the distance from the epicenter, and local geological conditions. Significant earthquakes can trigger landslides, tsunamis (if they occur underwater), and widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure. While the precise timing of earthquakes cannot be predicted, scientists study seismic activity to understand earthquake hazards and develop strategies for mitigation and preparedness.
