Terhességlaktáció

Terhességlaktáció refers to the physiological process where a woman lactates, or produces breast milk, during pregnancy. This phenomenon is not as common as postpartum lactation but can occur. Several factors can contribute to terhességlaktáció, including hormonal changes that begin early in pregnancy. The body prepares for breastfeeding even before the baby is born, and in some individuals, this preparation manifests as milk production.

The hormonal interplay of prolactin, estrogen, and progesterone plays a crucial role. While prolactin is the primary hormone responsible for milk production, its levels are kept in check by high estrogen levels during pregnancy. However, in some cases, prolactin may stimulate milk production despite these high estrogen levels. Progesterone also influences the mammary glands, preparing them for lactation.

Terhességlaktáció can manifest in various ways, from colostrum leakage to more noticeable milk production. Colostrum, the first milk produced, is rich in nutrients and antibodies and may be observed in small amounts. For some women, the milk production can be more significant. This condition is generally not a cause for concern and is considered a normal variation of pregnancy. It does not typically indicate any complications for the mother or the developing fetus. Some women may find the leakage uncomfortable or socially inconvenient, and in such instances, absorbent nursing pads can be used. The onset and intensity of terhességlaktáció can vary greatly among individuals.
