Teratavuina

Teratavuina is a term used in the field of teratology to describe a conceptual framework that emphasizes the timing of exposure to harmful agents during embryonic and fetal development. The term is used to analyze how different developmental windows yield distinct patterns of congenital anomalies.

Coined relatively recently in contemporary literature, teratavuina combines the prefix terato-, meaning malformed, with a suffix indicating a time window or period. It is not a disease on its own but a lens for organizing observations about teratogenic effects across gestation.

Researchers applying teratavuina categorize outcomes by the gestational stage at exposure, such as organogenesis vs. fetal development phases. This approach supports risk assessment, informs regulatory guidelines, and helps clinicians anticipate which anomalies are most likely given known exposures.

Classic examples cited within this framework include early exposure to isotretinoin, associated with craniofacial and central nervous system malformations, and later exposure to certain teratogens linked to limb anomalies. Teratavuina encourages considering both dose and timing to interpret results.
