Tenuretrack

Tenure-track is a form of faculty appointment in higher education in which an individual is hired into a position that may lead to tenure, a permanent and broadly protected appointment. The track usually begins with a probationary period for an assistant professor or equivalent, lasting several years, during which performance is evaluated for suitability for tenure.

During the probationary period, candidates are expected to establish a scholarly record, teach effectively, and contribute to service within the department or university. Evaluation typically involves a departmental review with assessment of research output, funding where relevant, teaching quality, and service contributions, and may include external letters from peers.

A successful tenure decision grants a permanent appointment and greater academic freedom and job security. If tenure is denied, the institution may offer a non-tenure-track position or terminate employment after meeting applicable notification requirements, depending on institution policies and labor laws.

Variations occur by country and institution. In the United States, the tenure-track usually culminates in a tenure decision after about six to seven years. In other countries, tenure systems may be different, with permanent contracts awarded on a different timetable or under different criteria.
