Tenkos

Tenkos are a type of spirit or supernatural entity found in Japanese folklore. They are often depicted as mischievous or sometimes helpful beings, taking on various forms. The most common portrayal of a tenko is a fox spirit, which has a long and rich history in Japanese mythology. These fox spirits are believed to possess magical abilities, including shapeshifting, illusion casting, and the power to manipulate dreams.

The power and number of tails a tenko possesses are often indicative of its age and magical prowess. A young tenko might have one or a few tails, while an ancient and powerful tenko could have nine tails, a revered number in Japanese culture. The nine-tailed fox, known as a kyūbi no kitsune, is a particularly famous and often feared figure.

Tenkos are not always depicted as purely benevolent. They can be tricksters, leading travelers astray or playing pranks on humans. However, they can also be protectors or bringers of good fortune, especially if they are treated with respect and offered appropriate reverence.
