Temporomandibulære

Temporomandibulære refers to anatomical structures associated with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is the articulation between the temporal bone of the skull and the mandible, or lower jaw. This joint is crucial for the complex movements of the jaw, including opening and closing the mouth, chewing, and speaking. The TMJ is a synovial joint, meaning it is enclosed in a capsule filled with synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint and allows for smooth movement.

Disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint and its surrounding muscles are collectively known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Symptoms of TMD can vary widely but commonly include pain in the jaw joint, face, neck, and shoulders, as well as difficulty chewing, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, and limited jaw movement. The causes of TMD are not fully understood but are thought to be multifactorial, including injury to the jaw, arthritis, or structural problems within the joint. Stress and teeth grinding (bruxism) are also frequently cited as contributing factors. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, patient history, and sometimes imaging studies. Treatment approaches range from self-care measures and lifestyle adjustments to physical therapy, medication, and, in some cases, surgical intervention.
