In materials science and nanotechnology, template-controlled synthesis or deposition uses a solid or soft template to direct growth and organization of materials. Examples include templated synthesis of nanowires within porous matrices, or polymerization reactions guided by surface templates to yield ordered nanostructures. Removing or retaining the template can yield porous, aligned, or functionally anisotropic materials.
