Temperatuurscurves

Temperatuurscurves, or temperature curves, are graphical representations of how the temperature of a system changes over time, or how a property varies with temperature. They are used in experimental and industrial settings to study heating and cooling processes, thermal stability, and phase behavior.

Common forms include heating curves, which plot temperature versus time as a sample is heated at a controlled rate, and cooling curves, which show temperature decline during cooling. In calorimetry and materials science, curves of heat flow versus temperature (for example, differential scanning calorimetry curves) reveal phase transitions such as melting, crystallization, and glass transition. The slope of a heating curve relates to heat capacity and the rate of heat transfer, while plateaus or inflection points indicate thermal events or phase changes.

Measurement and data quality are critical for meaningful temperatuurscurves. Temperature is typically measured with thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), infrared sensors, or calorimetric detectors. Accurate curves require careful calibration, good insulation, and minimization of heat losses. Sensor placement and sample geometry can introduce lag and affect temporal resolution.

Applications of temperatuurscurves span process control and quality assurance in metallurgy, glass tempering, polymer curing, and food processing, as well as environmental monitoring and battery testing. Analysts use curves to compare against reference profiles, assess thermal performance, and study kinetics. When curves are recorded at different heating or cooling rates, Arrhenius-type analyses can be applied to extract activation energies and understand temperature-dependent reaction rates.
