Temeljenje, in civil engineering and construction, refers to the system and process of transferring the loads of a structure to the ground below. It is a critical component of safety and stability, ensuring that settlements and movements do not compromise the building’s integrity.

Foundations are generally categorized as shallow or deep. Shallow foundations transfer loads to the upper layers of soil and include isolated pad footings, strip footings, raft or mat foundations, and combined footings. Deep foundations reach deeper soils or bedrock and include piles, drilled shafts, and caissons. The selection depends on soil properties, the weight of the structure, local groundwater conditions, and frost depth, as well as economic considerations.

Design of temeljenje focuses on several key factors. The bearing capacity of the soil must support the imposed loads without excessive settlement. Differential settlement between parts of the structure should be minimized. The foundation must resist vertical loads as well as lateral forces from wind, earthquakes, and soil movement. Proper analysis also accounts for soil-structure interaction, hydrogeology, and construction practicality. Local building codes and international standards guide material requirements, safety factors, and testing procedures.

Construction of foundations involves site investigation, excavation to the required depth, and preparation of a level bearing surface. Reinforcement is placed as specified, followed by concrete pouring and curing. Piles or drilled elements are installed using appropriate equipment when required, with backfilling and surface finishing completing the work. Regular quality control, including soil testing and inspection, helps ensure long-term performance.
