The concept dates back to the early 20th century, when telephone and radio telemetry were employed for weather forecasting, aviation, and military purposes. With the advent of digital electronics and wireless networking, telemetriskommunikation has expanded to include internet protocols (e.g., MQTT, HTTP) and embedded sensor platforms like ESP32 or Raspberry Pi. Standards play a crucial role in interoperability. In the automotive sector, ISO 11898 (Controller Area Network) and ISO 11459 (Wireless LAN) are widely used, while the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) governs maritime telemetry. In industrial settings, protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus, and Profibus carry telemetric data across heterogeneous networks.

Challenges include bandwidth constraints, latency for critical systems, and security threats that can compromise data integrity. Countermeasures involve robust authentication, quantum‑safe encryption, and frequency management to mitigate interference. Despite these issues, telemetriskommunikation continues to grow in importance, fostering efficient monitoring and control across sectors and contributing to the evolution of connected, autonomous systems.
