Tekaistut

Tekaistut is a term used in Finnish horticulture to denote the transplantation of nursery-grown seedlings into a field or larger container. The practice typically follows an initial seedbed or container phase, with the aim of improving establishment, vigor, and subsequent yield.

It is employed in forestry for reforestation projects and in agriculture and ornamental horticulture for vegetables, herbs, and ornamental crops. Seedlings selected for transplanting are those that show uniform size and robust root systems. Hardening-off is common to acclimate plants to outdoor conditions before field planting.

Typical steps include preparing the bed or soil, choosing appropriate spacing for the species, careful lifting and handling to minimize root damage, and ensuring sufficient moisture after transplanting. The timing often favors cooler, moister periods to reduce transplant shock, and additional measures such as mulching or shading may be used in hot climates.

Benefits of tekaistut include higher survival rates, more uniform stands, and earlier canopy development. Drawbacks include labor intensity, equipment needs, and potential root disturbance or disease transmission if stock is not carefully managed.
