Teisendajad

Teisendajad is the Estonian plural of teisendaja, a term that translates into English as “representative” or “delegate.” The word is formed from the verb teisendada, meaning “to represent” or “to transmit.” In Estonian legal and administrative language, teisendajad denote individuals who act on behalf of a group, organization, or state. The concept is central to several institutions in Estonia.

In the legislative sphere, members of the Riigikogu, Estonia’s unicameral parliament, are often referred to as teisendajad of the electorate. They are elected to represent the interests of their constituencies in the drafting and passing of laws. Similarly, municipal assemblies employ teisendajad who attend city councils and convey local viewpoints.

Diplomatic contexts also use the word; foreign service officers are described as teisendajad of the Estonian government in other countries. They negotiate on state matters, endorse official policies, and foster bilateral relations.

Within the corporate sector, board members and shareholders’ representatives are recognised as teisendajad who act in a fiduciary capacity for the interests of the company’s stakeholders. In non‑profit and professional organisations, trustees and executive officers frequently assume the role of teisendajad, ensuring that organisational mandates are carried out.

The term appears in many official documents such as statutes, regulatory acts, and international agreements. Its usage underscores Estonia’s commitment to the principle of representation and accountability across political, diplomatic, and civil society spheres.
