Teabekirjandust

Teabekirjandust refers to a literary movement in Estonia that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The term translates to "tea literature" in English, suggesting a focus on light-hearted and entertaining writing styles. At the core of this movement lies a desire to reflect everyday life, humor, and the societal norms of the time.

While distinct from Estonia's more traditional literary genres, Teabekirjandust participated in the broader Romantic and Realist literary currents of the era. Its exponents, primarily poets, writers, and journalists, sought to engage their audience with narratives that captured the aesthetic of tea gatherings and the meandering conversations that accompanied them. As such, the literary characteristics of this movement often mirrored the spirit of gentle humor, discussion, and meandering storytelling associated with tea culture.

Adherents of Teabekirjandust suggested alternative or adjacent paths in literature almost six decades before postmodern literature's peak in the 1960s and 1970s. Admittedly, particularly during World War I, Teabekirjandust became much more subdued compared to previous periods, a reflection of Estonia's rapidly deteriorating circumstances as the century began.
