Taxussläktet
Taxussläktet is the genus of yews, which are coniferous trees and shrubs belonging to the family Taxaceae. These plants are characterized by their slow growth, longevity, and distinctive red, fleshy arils that surround the seeds. The genus is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with species found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Yews are dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female. Male plants produce pollen cones, while female plants produce ovules that develop into seeds enclosed by the aril. The wood of yew trees is known for its strength and durability, historically used for making bows. However, it is important to note that all parts of the yew plant, except for the fleshy aril, are highly toxic due to the presence of taxine alkaloids. Despite their toxicity, yews have significant ecological roles and are often cultivated as ornamental plants in gardens and landscapes. Several species are recognized within the genus, with Taxus baccata, the European yew, being one of the most well-known.
