Taustateoria
Taustateoria, which translates from Finnish as “background theory,” refers to a conceptual framework that provides the contextual foundations for analyzing a phenomenon. It is widely used in social science research, particularly within sociology, political science, and communication studies, to situate empirical observations within a broader theoretical landscape. A taustateoria typically draws on established theories—such as structural functionalism, critical theory, or symbolic interactionism—to guide the interpretation of data, identify key variables, and propose potential causal mechanisms.
Unlike a primary explanatory theory that might predict specific outcomes, taustateoria serves as a reference point
The term is especially common in Finnish academic writing, where it appears in methodology sections of dissertations
