Tapahtumaloki

Tapahtumaloki (Finnish for "event log") is a chronological record of events produced by computer systems, applications, and network devices. It is used for monitoring, troubleshooting, security auditing, and regulatory compliance. Events typically include a timestamp, origin (source, host or process), event type (informational, warning, error, fault), severity, and a human- or machine-readable message. Some logs are structured (for example JSON or XML) to ease parsing, while others are plain text.

Logs can be generated locally on a device or collected centrally in a logging infrastructure. Centralization enables correlation across distributed components and long-term retention. Common implementations include the Windows Event Log, Linux journald, and the syslog family, as well as modern centralized platforms that index and analyze logs (ELK/EFK stack, Splunk, Graylog, Fluentd).

Key concepts include log levels, retention policies, and runbooks. Logs are used for diagnosing failures, detecting security incidents, auditing user actions, and verifying compliance with organizational policies. Privacy and data protection considerations require minimization of sensitive information in logs and strict access controls.

Challenges include high data volume, normalization across heterogeneous sources, clock synchronization, and ensuring log integrity and tamper resistance. Best practices emphasize structured logging, consistent schemas, standardized fields, correlation identifiers, and secure transport (for example TLS).
